Hey all

New user here

Was prescribed Amitriptyline about 3 weeks ago from my TMJ problem (as a muscle relaxant and for the headaches)I an on 10mg with no other medicines. The problem is I was due my period on Sunday and it hasn't arrived yet and today is now Friday. OK i know its only a few days late but could this be due to the meds or maybe just that i am stressed out lately?

No, these's no chance I'm pregnant, but just wondering if anyone has experienced "disruptions" with periods while on this med. I'm never this late ...

Any opinions welcomed
Thanks

Hi Chicky81,

I'm on 25mg Amitriptyline, and I haven't really noticed any difference. Mine have always been irregular, but the strangest occurance I've had is that last month I got my period 5 days early, which never happens.

Do you work or live with any other women? Last year, myself and a woman I work with both had a couple of strange months (before I started the medication), and in the end we worked out that our bodies had merely just synchronised with eachother.

Otherwise I don't think the amitriptyline would be a factor, particularly with such a low dose.

Are you finding it helpful with the headaches?

I would like to argue otherwise. The amitryptaline could have an effect. After all, it effects the hypothalamus, which regulates other bodily functions. And even a low dose (based on standard dosing) might produce significant effects and be as powerful as 100 mg dose based on individual's metabolism and the way they react to medicines.

It is interesting to read this story about synchronizing of periods. Thanks for sharing that. I've heard of women living together in close circles etc. do have same periods, and it appears it happens due to the pheromones, if I am not mistaken.

Hi guys, thanx for the replies so far

MelanieV ; how long have you been on this med? I've only started it two weeks ago so I guess its a little soon to see much change. I'm taking 10mg about 2 hrs before bed but still waking during the night (maybe its because of the nightguard that i waske or the pain i'm not sure) but finding it difficult waking when its getting up time! I'm waking up headache free but come lunchtime i find its back again, with some facial twinges during the day. I'm back to see my tmj guy in 3 weeks so am not sure what to report back to him.
No not living with females etc so the med was the only change i could put it down to. LOL it did arrive Friday night tho .... maybe it was just that I was stressed out over my jaw and my headaches and a few other nihhling issues ....

edgaras ; Interesting that you say it could be the meds playing havoc with the system, even at such a low dose. I susspose it like TMJ not only affecting the jaw , but neck, shoulders etc ... that meds can affect other areas them where you would expect them to work.

Would be interested to see if anyone else has found this. As mentioned above I've only been on this med 2 weeks so just wondering really. Thank

I've been on the meds since early November, and I struggle to wake up in the morning as well. I think that's just a typical side-effect to amitriptyline; most people I've heard of that are taking it have this same issue.
It's helped with my headaches, but if I forget to take it one night, the next day is very bad.
I hope it will work for you.

Melanie,
Melanie,

Have you tried nortriptalyne, it is usually notably less sedating.

Hi edgaras,

The sedative feeling of amitriptyline isn't as pronounced now as it used to be. It mostly stands out now when I'm particularly tired (happens mostly on Fridays). My GP, who is monitoring me, isn't overly happy that I'm taking these in the first place. Unfortunately, he doesn't know much about TMJ and is acting on a letter he received from my OMS. I now need to go back to my OMS to get him to give my doctor more guidence, as he doesn't understand why it's not cured yet. Even though I've tried to explain to him that there is no quick fix to this, it really just needs to be managed.

On the up side, they are taking care of the headaches, and when they struggle, my TENS unit works a treat.

Thanks,
Melanie.
