Q: American name for baby girl

Hello everyone,

I feel very excited, my wife will give me a daughter next month. But I am not ready to name her. I am a chinese and don't know how to give a american name. Could you tell me the general rule?

We usualy give name by meaning. So I found Larina, which means sea gull. My name is hai, which means ocean or sea. She should be very precious, above the sea (me). I am not sure this name is good or not.

Any suggestion would be appreciate.

Thanks,

Hai Wu

I think Larina is a good name. It sounds nice and has a good meaning. It isn't so common that there will be ten other girls with the same name at her school, but it's not a name that's hard for other people to spell and pronounce.

My son, who is a student in middle school, like another name "Meranda". He may have some feeling about girl name. I'm not sure which one is better.

Thanks again,

Miranda is a nice name. It's more common than Larina, but not extremely common. I think it's very pretty. It means "worthy of admiration."

Miranda is the correct spelling, though. It comes from the name of a character in a play, and that's how it was spelled there.

You don't have to give her an American name. Consider a Chinese name.

Larina and Miranda (spelled this way only) are beautiful wonderful girl names. Either one would be a great choice. I personally prefer Miranda, but I love the meaning behind Larina better. Good luck!
