Q: Always tired , one swollen tonsil
asked by: Willethin on March 23rd, 2009

About a month ago I noticed one of my tonsils were swollen. I've always had problems with tonsil stones, but my doctor just prescribes me antibiotics and says its not necessary to remove tonsils anymore. I am constantly clearing my throat or getting some kind of cough. I always have a bad taste in my mouth and feel the need to brush my teeth. I then started to sweat in my sleep and become noticeably tired. No matter how much I sleep, I never feel rested. I recently started to become dizzy and light headed. Please help.

I'm a 21 year old college student.

This is happening to me too!! Minus the dizziness or sore throat. But the swollen tonsil, night sweats, fatigue - me exactly. Please, did you find anything out? Currently waiting on blood work results, and have an appointment scheduled with an ENT. I am worried sick...

I have the same issues, though I have had my swollen tonsil for damn near my whole life. I've been diagnosed with sleep apnea, due in large part to the massive tonsil on the right side of my throat.

One doctor told me that my tonsil was swollen due to allergies, though I've recently been reading that it's unlikely that allergies would cause just one of the tonsils to severely swell.

I'm going to schedule an appointment with an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor to have him take a look at it. I understand that the older you get, the more risky a tonsillectomy becomes; however, I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired at 24 years old, and I think it may be time to have those suckers cut out.

To Willethin, I would also suggest seeing an ENT doctor, as they specialize in staring at tonsils. It's better to get on top of it now, rather than end up chronically fatigued from lack of sleep 3 years later like myself! Good luck.

Always tired, one swollen tonsil
I don't have sleep apnea and I am pretty sure I don't have alergies.

Well my blood work came back good. Had tests done the same day on my thyroid - seems mine is a bit underactive. Not sure if an underactive throid could be a cause of night sweats and fatigue, but we'll see.

Also had my ENT Appointment - It was originally scheduled for 2 months out. One day I called and they had a cancellation so my appointment went from 2 months of potential agony in waiting, to getting me in right away. Thank God!!

Doctor told me he wants to remove my tonsils and send them for biopsy. He said I shouldn't be all that worried. Yeah right! I am going insane. Needless to say, I am having my tonsils removed tomorrow!

I have heard and read everywhere that the recovery as an adult is absolute horror. I don't care about the pain, I just want the results of the biopsy to come back good! I am so scared that it might be the unthinkable...

Hello Everyone,

If your tonsil is casusing you such discomfort, in my opinoin you you should have it removed. Better now than later....antibotics will only stop the innfection (that is likely what is causing the inflammatory swelling)until the next time. There will be a "next time" if you don't remove it. If you notice all of you are in your early 20's... you probably were having problems at a much younger age but was probably treated as strep throat. GO FOR IT..TAKE THEM OUT and live life to it's fullest ....HAPPY LIVING.

Don't have them taken out as an adult. The mortality rate (yes, death rate) is very high when they are taken out as an adult.
