Q: altering a bad bite

Please help:

If anyone has had any successful treatment in correcting their bite please write to me, or if anyone can help in any way I would be so grateful. Here is my story:

I am a 33 year old lady from England and have been diagnosed with TMJ. I have an open bite from thrusting my tongue (which has caused me to have a very narrow palete, and my teeth curve inwards). Also I have an overbite. So all in all my bite is very bad (I can only chew on my back teeth and even these do not meet properly).

I am seeing a neuromuscular dentist who has given my an expansion brace to wear and also been given tongue exercises, to control my tongue thrust. I will then have to have another brace in around 10 months to fix my overbite.

Does anyone know if fixing my bite will help my tmj problems?

Also I clench really badly at the moment, is that due to the bite being unstable?

I really want to stop clentching as, it is putting a lot of pressure on my jaw joints.

I am getting really bad dizzy spells with it, which are driving my crazy, as I just want them to STOP! I might have to give up my job soom as things have got so bad.

Anyones advice or personal story would be so great to hear as at the moment I feel I am the only person suffering with it and I know that is not the case.

This is just speculation, I'm not a professional and only have my own experience to speak from, but as far as my own problems go, I think I clench because it momentarily relieves the discomfort I have. Of course, it makes the issue much worse afterwards, but I've somehow trained my body to think clenching is going to help - it's a bad cycle. I've been trying to be as conscious of my clenching as possible and just not doing it (no matter how much I want to).

I have a very minor case I think of TMJ, and was told that bite adjustment would make it go away. I had this done but very recently - so far no results but I am giving it some time. I suppose that for some people (hopefully you and I!), a bite adjustment can indeed cure a case of TMJ.
