Q: Allergies and sinus surgery
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 17th, 2009
I want to know why I have gotten worse instead of better. I'm very congested, have a bad cough, and lots of drainage. I thought the surgery was supposed to stop all of this.

Sinusitis Answer A5812

Current medical status: I had sinus surgery this past December and have gotten worse since the surgery- consisting of allergy symptoms. I had the battery of allergy tests, but nothing was found.

The exact type of sinus surgery would have been helpful. If the sinusitis was due to allergy, leaving the sinus mucosa more or less intact would not stop the signs and symptoms. The problem with the allergies is that a person might be allergic to almost every substance known, although some substances cause allergy more often than others. The allergy test batteries contain only the most often allergens. Therefore, the batteries might not contain the allergen that causes your allergy.
You might want to schedule a follow-up with the surgeon or ask a second opinion from an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist about your treatment.
