I was recently diagnosed with GERD, hiatal hernia and colitis and the doctor, among other things, put me on Flagyl and prednisone. The Flagyl was to get rid of bad bacteria in my body that might be causing the stomach/esophagus problems to happen and I have RA and some other inflammation issues.

I stopped taking both yesterday as I found out Flagyl is a sulphur drug and I am allergic to sulphur. I became so swollen that my tongue almost choked me when I was in bed. It was hard to breathe. It was horrible. There was also an awful white film in my mouth, which I read could be yeast but I'm sure there are other ways to get rid of excess yeast in the body.

The prednisone made me very moody and swollen, too. I've taken it before with little tolerance. It's really odd. They gave me a shot of steroids and the shot actually made me feel better. The prednisone, not so much.

My husband advised me to call the doctor but being as I have stopped the medication and I see the doctor on the 10th anyway, I figured I would just wait until then. No harm/no foul.

The last time I took Flagyl was yesterday morning. I wonder how long it takes for it to get out of my body completely? Also, does anyone have any experience with taking probiotics (the kind you find in a health food store)?

I read that furry tongue, glossitis, and stomatitis have occurred in a clinical trial of people taking Flagyl; these may be associated with a sudden overgrowth of Candida which may occur during therapy.

Neurotoxic effects, including seizures and peripheral neuropathy, have been reported after 5 to 7 days of doses of 6 g to 10.4 g every other day.

What dosage have you been taking?

Hi leewiz,

The Flagyl was 500mg and I was to take it twice per day (and I did for four days). It's the devil!!! (for me it is).

My doctor called in Clindamycin 150mg - 2 caps every six hours (to replace the Flagyl). Here's hoping it works!
