Just turned 20 a couple weeks ago, I've already gone through about 6 months of moderate drinking drank 5/7 days got tipsy most of those nights.

After a while I decided I'd like to cut down a little because it was killing my motivation to go get a job and improve myself. Second day after not drinking the symptoms started, which last about a week. Anger, sweats, insomnia, worse depression, bad dreams, and the reason I don't drink much anymore, extreme trouble breathing while laying down. I've still never heard of that last symptom from anyone else. Confused

Anyway, I went on ativan for a few days, found it made detoxing smooth and I quit for a couple of months, but found social gatherings alot more stressed and generally less enjoyable. So I tried drinking again, the same withdrawal symptoms came back a couple days after as if I'd never stopped. I experiemented and found even one small glass of wine to make withdrawal, although not as severe a couple days after.

TLDR
I was mainly wondering if there was any drug that you could take or period of time of not drinking you could spend for the withdrawals to not come back? It just doesn't seem right that after such a relatively short period of time my body is wrecked for the rest of my life.

PS. I've tried probably 5 different anti depressants from seperate drug classes all with horrible side effects or just plain old didn't do a thing. Alcohol was/is the only thing that worked for me.

I don't know that I have any answer for you but ativan. That is the drug of choice in the hospital when a patient is going into the DT's (delerious tremors). It is the most effective medication I have used. You sound like you have an addiction. This is not about how much time you have spent drinking or how much you drink. When you have a disorder like alcoholism it is genetically hardwired into you and you have no control over how your body will react to any amount of alcohol. It is a genetic disorder and very real. Perhaps talking to a therapist and continuing to abstain is the best option for you.

Well, there was a time I could get drunk a couple nights in a row then only have the one day hangover. So it leads me to believe this is a way I've conditioned myself. For example I've heard meth addicts have trouble with the short term memory for the rest of their lives.

I guess it's just aggrevating, I heard about stomach cancer, liver damage and all that gradual problems you get. But nobody ever told me I'd end up getting 7 day hangovers, that kind of crap would make people show some restraint, everyone I tell about my withdrawals has never heard a THING about them. DARE needs an update or something. /end rant

Hmm. I have a far worse drinking history and my withdrawal isn't near as bad.... could be tolerance, I don't know.... maybe somebody with more knowledge will chime in. I don't think a seven day hangover from one night of drinking is normal, so I'm wondering if something else could be going on? Have you been to a doctor or had a physical lately?
So is the seven day hangover giving you restraint?

I hear you about social gatherings being less enjoyable. I'm so new at this that I don't feel at all qualified to give adviceon that yet... but your posting here same as me so that tells me you too want to quit. You can do it. You did it before. Keep posting and good luck.

Some people can have allergic reactions to alcohol. This can cause this kind of reaction that will last for days. The other possibility is that you have an intolerance because of your liver. Your liver may not be able to handle the alcohol well. You could ask your doctor to do a liver enzyme panel to check for toxicity in the liver.

You will get used to going to social events without drinking. It does take time. Give yourself a chance.

I really want a new doctor, I've already been to her with all my problems, even came to her about midway through my drinking and she never even mentioned withdrawals of any kind.

I'm pretty sure if it's an allergy it's not to any specific kind of alcohol because it's happened from lots of varied kinds. And I have a relative with an allergy to alcohol, it happens quick and is over in hours. If I don't stop drinking I never go through withdrawal, lol.

Thanks for the idea about the liver thing.

It definately makes NOT drinking easier when you know you're gonna pay for it for days... drank in any amount probably 10 times in the last year since i started getting withdrawals. I've found out though that it's not just alcohol that does it to me. Seems like things that work on my BZ receptor, Ativan/Zopiclone(sleep aid) also make me go through a comparable withdrawal although shorter by a few days and without the trouble breathing.
