I am a recovering alcoholic, and it actually has been pretty easy to give up drinking. I have tried many times to quit and stay sober, but all those times failed b/c of one major reason, the urge to drink again. The unrelenting desire to have the first drink. I asked about medications that help, and I was told about anti-abuse type meds that make you sick/miserable if you have even one drop of alcohol. Okay, its might work, but I know that after the first time that happened I would stop taking it. It wasn't until I did my own research and specifically asked my doctor about Campral. When taken properly, for me at least, it removed about 70% of my desire to drink. and for the other 30%, it seems to have given me control to say NO! Whereas before, I would easily crumble under the weight of the obsessive compulsion to drink (which I no longer have). True, group therapy is essential, and I do go to AA. I also see a therapist. But, talking doesn't balance the chemicals in your brain that are all kinds of f**ked up from heavy drinking.
All I wanted to say was campral works for me, and maybe it will work for you. (Trying to help others, chapter 7 of the big book.) Smile

I am so glad for you turn around. Now begins the "Will Power". I congratulate you on your recovery and hope you continue doing as well as you are. Also very happy you have found a med that works for you. As far as the urge goes, you know this is only a bandaid for that. Like all the rest of us here on the board that take many medications for whatever it is that we suffer from. I wish you the best of luck.

I am a recovered alcoholic myself, not only was I addicted to alcohol but I was also addicted to party drugs and marijuana.

I'd like to congratulate you on your decision to staying sober. I agree it's not hard to stop, i mean you feel lousy for a few weeks but thats about it. I know the feeling of wanting to have that first drink though. I believe it's all in the mind. Just tell yourself no and just imagine what it would be like if you did have that drink again.. Really there is no satisfaction in drinking don't you think? Keep strong. I know you can do it. god if I quit all the c*** I did believe me anyone can. Don't be too hard on yourself if you slip up. I sometimes do. Very rarely but it happens. Just understand you're human ,you slipped and try again.Relising you have a problem is the first step to fixing it. Some people don't even get there. It just shows you are strong minded and care about yourself and others around you.
Take care, keep strong,

Oh no... more "Drugs aren't fun" denial. Drugs ARE fun.

No satisfaction from drinking? Yeah right... I love the buzz, it's such a fun way to spend time, and I always plan on drinking several beers (as if one beer is going to get me a good buzz, LOL)... perhaps over the course of a few days. Binges are best for me.

But seriously... the only reason to not drink are the physical side effects. That's the only way I can curb my urge... that damn cirrhosis!!! But yeah, if it weren't for the threat of liver disease and all those other complications then I'd binge all the time because I love the buzz... always have, always will.

So yeah it sucks but at least I am honest with myself about liking it... I just can't do it or else!

Too bad pot is illegal then I could have fun without wrangling my innards. But that's the hypocrisy of society for you... ban the only alternative to liquid poison.

Of course I'm not a moral elitist who thinks any kind of drug buzz is "wrong"... but when you are killing yourself and your life just to have fun then I think you can call that a legitimate problem... however the act of doing a drug, in and of itself, is not evil or bad just because it alters your brain-state. Let's all just be honest and truthful here okay?
