I get a feeling at the open of my stomach, just below the cetre of my rib, as if someone is squeezing my insides, and I get bad air hunger, I just want to get a deep satisfing breath and cant. I do this everyday its can start anytime, anywhere. The air hunger really frightens me. My doc gave me a preventer to try, but it didnt help.

Are you going through a stressful period in your life?
Do you often feel tensed and anxious?
Do you usually yawn and sigh at the time of breathing difficulties?

hi
Yes I yawn alot, and sigh all of the time. Life is always stressful for me, But even when I am not stressed I do it. I must admit, i dont know how to relax...but if i do i sit down, anytime of the day i sleep, or nap really.
I have been doing it everyday for the last year.

When do you usually get these attacks of air hunger (no related to physical activity)?

hi
I dont know really, They can start on waking or within 10 minutes of waking up., they can start when I leave for work, they can start after food.
I dont think i can put a scale on them. I do however drink a lot tea, i do smoke, although trying to quit.
With the air hunger its daily, and goes all day. I have had it today since waking, and still have it now.

You know, it could be something to do with your posture. At one point I was slouching so bad that for several days I had real trouble breathing properly and had to take big breaths, and even after I learned to sit up straight the feeling lingered. Do you slouch?

Hmm but those cigarettes could be doing it too. But if the feeling is near the stomach then it wouldn't make much sense.

Maybe you're anaemic, if you keep falling asleep. When you're sleeping, has anyone told you they find it impossible to wake you up?

Get checked for diabetes, too.

Sorry if I alarm you! Keep in mind that I have 0 medical knowledge, I'm just drawing from a mixture of experience and Wikipedia Wink

Hmm that could be it well in that case I'm kind of hoping it is because then at least it won't be asthma which is worse, right? But ask you Dr, of course! And do keep us updated.

Do you tend to breath with the upper chest?
Are you experiencing breath control on talking, like taking big breath to say three words?
Are you over-talkative?
Do you feel exhausted and tired all the time?

The cause of your symptoms is hyperventilation or overbreathing.
When overbreathing the most common tendency is to breathe predominantly with the upper chest (there is a great variety in how people overbreath; normal speed of breathing but taking large volumes in, or, taking normal volumes but with increased speed).
Occasionally, it is a primary problem, but, it is frequently associated with other conditions, like lung diseases, anemia, thyroid gland problems.
It could be also, due to anxiety and panic disorder.
Acctually, anxiety and overbreathing fuel one another, leading to a continuation and possible escalation of the situation.
It's good to know that this type of breathing is very common in the asthmatic patient (asthmatic patients have feeling as if someone is squeezing their chest, and, find difficult breathing out while there is feeling of not getting enough air)

Best wishes!

Did you tell your doctor about the bowel movement problems? When you exercise or walk long distances are you out of breath?

Doesn't seem like asthma. Have they done spirometric tests yet (blowing into the machine)?

jen3535!
Do you get symptoms like dizziness, faintness, tingling in the lips and hands/feet (cold hand and feet) and headache, when you get attack of air hunger?
Are you experiencing dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, or, "butterflies" in the stomach?
Can you describe yourself as being too apprehensive, aroused, and vigilant, feeling "on edge," or, impatient?

I think your air hunger experience is just due to an anxiety issue.
You have symptoms of anxiety.
Although the specific manifestations of anxiety vary for each person, this chronic state of tension can affect major systems of the body (breathing, heart work, diameter of blood vessels, salivary gland secretion, need for urination, form and frequency of bowel movements, body sensations, sexual pleasure, can all be affected by the anxiety)
Your symptoms and your chronic tension (or excessive worrying about everyday life), can define your condition as generalized anxiety disorder.
Once more, you can complete your examinations at your GP office, by getting regular blood test and thyroid gland hormone status test (quick blood test, too), to exclude other possible problems.
My personal opinion is that you have an anxiety issue.
This can be easily solved by getting appropriate treatment, even without medication, just, by learning anxiety management techniques and skills to assess situations more realistically (cognitive therapy).

Best wishes!
