Hello,

For the past two months, I have had whole body numbness and ageusia (inability to taste). It happened one morning when I woke up. The numbness started in mouth and throughout the day extended throughout my whole body. It does NOT come and go. I have also not been able to taste anything. It is not a lessening of taste. It is a complete inability to taste. I can smell fine, though. The ageusia also does NOT come and go. It is always there.

The doctors do not know what it is. I hope to see a neurologist soon and maybe get an MRI. A doctor thought I had Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. My pulse went from 60 to 120 beats per minute during a tilt table test recently. Last spring I was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism, but that appears to have been corrected with levothyroxine.

Any idea what is happening to me? Is this potentially serious?

The only medication I take is levothyroxine. I've been taking it since April with no problems.

Loss of Taste But Not Smell
I'm not sure my situation is related. My taste came and went for 9 months and the doctors couldn't figure out why. My smell was also fine. I finally figured out it was an insecticide I bought in April to deal with an ant problem. I wanted to post this somewhere in case someone else has experienced this.

Laffter,

How exactly was the insecticide effecting your taste? Fumes in the air?

I don't think I've been around any hazardous chemicals.

Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I believe it was the fumes hanging in the air for several hours after a heavy spraying. We were experiencing drought conditions where I live and the ants were looking for water. My old spray would kill them but not keep them from coming back. So I bought a new can. I have not used it since August or September and my taste has been fine early December. (It takes 8-16 weeks to cycle through.)
