Q: After hiking toes hurt

My wife and I love to hike. However, it's not uncommon for some of my toes - or more accurately, toenails - to be very painful following a hike. This happens more often if we are on a steep terrain. My guess is that the toes are being jammed against the shoe when descending. I've tried various socks, highing boots, tennis shoes....nothing seems to change it. Ideas?
