Q: Acute bacterial inflammation and bacterial vaginosis
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 20th, 2009
I am 26 years old and have only started having sex 7 months ago with my partner. I am his only partner too. I then started birth control January 2009(the two months injection) as a result my periods have stopped!!!! My question however is that, I have recently started experiencing the following: itchiness around the outside of my vergina, constant urination ,too much discharge(white, not smelling)and abdominal pain (not constant, it comes and goes). The itching has stopped but it practically rains of discharge. The last time we had sex was on the 12 May 2008, the itching started that weekend and the discharge started on the 18 May 2008.
What could this be?

According to the symptoms you provided (itching outside of the vagina, frequent urination, white vaginal discharge, and abdominal pain), it is possible that you might be experiencing acute bladder inflammation and/or bacterial vaginosis (vaginal infection of the mucosa). Both conditions might be caused by bacteria transmitted from your partner.

Therefore, you might want to visit your family doctor for a urine laboratory test and urine culture and your gynecologist for a vaginal smear. The results would detect the exact reason. If bacteria are detected, then you might be prescribed antibiotics.

It is very important for your boyfriend to have a urine culture and to undergo the same treatment (antibiotics) as you. Otherwise, once your treatment is over, he might transmit the infection once more.
