Causes of acne
Acne can occur as a result of certain medications (specifically, androgens, some seizure-controlling medications, and lithium), clothing straps (e.g. bicycle helmets, ; bra straps; shirt collars), cosmetics, family history of acne, hormones, humidity, and pollution.  Acne can also be made worse by picking or scratching at the skin or acne, and by stress.  Scientists do not believe that chocolate, or greasy food causes acne. However, hormonal levels are by far understood to be the most significant cause of acne.  

 Risk factors
Approximately 85% of young people ages 12 to 24 have acne. Associated with the onset of puberty, acne begins affecting many people between the ages of 12 and 17.  However, acne can last for several years, perhaps between 5 and 10 years.   

Some onsets of acne may be associated with hormonal changes, particularly with women and may occur due to menstrual changes, birth control medication, and childbirth.  Women may also be affected through the usage of cosmetics.  However, while women are perhaps more likely to continue to have acne while hormones fluctuate, men typically have more serious and longer-last acne than women.  Also, Caucasians are particularly affected by acne.  However, it's worth repeating that acne can affect anyone, regardless of age, sex, or ethnicity.
