The weirdest thing just happened to me-- I accidentally cut myself while sharpening a cleaver, totally freaked out & was extremely upset by it, yet I was alright dabbling with cutting in the past. I can't get past how strange that is. Has anyone else experienced this before? I'm thinking the aspect of control or a lack thereof probably has something to do with it...I really want to understand my reaction.

i have done the same thing. i used to cut myself, haven't for a while now, but the only kind of pain i don't freak out about is the pain i cause myself.
i think it is the control thing, i used to do it as a sort of punishment for myself and as something i could control myself, unlike the rest of my life.

Control is the main reason most people cut (at least me and most of the cutters I know). We all feel like we have no control over what is happening and then when we cut ourselves we have the control to make it hurt and to make it feel better.
