I have a huge problem with my bowels. I have been using laxatives every day for many years now. I suffer from eating disorders for more than 15 years. I cannot quit them as my bowel is used to this use and I keep getting lots of pain and bloatings. Is it possible for my bowels to get back to normal after many years of abuse and how?

Hello, and thanks for your medical question on E Health Forum.

Yes it is possible for the intestines to recover its function.

But this might take considerable amount of time depending on the damage that has been induced.

A upper GI endoscopy and biopsy of intestines can help to know the exact state of the intestines.

You might consult a gastroenterologist , who can perform the tests and advice you accordingly.

I hope this helps.
