Q: Abnormal cell growth in uterus
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 3rd, 2009
I am 26 years old and I have formally been told that I had abnormal cell growth in my uteris. Well my doctor told me that it has went away. I also have a 3 cm cyst on my left ovary that causes me pain all the time. Mostly in my lower back. Now I am experiencing brown/red discharge during the whole month, excluding when I have my period that lasts about 7 to 10 days. My question is WHAT is going on? And do I need to see my doctor again.

Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth's Ask a Doctor forum.

Abnormal cell growth in uterus causing brownish discharge or bleeding through out the month could be endometriosis. The other possibility is andenomyosis where the cells lining the cavity of the uterus also enter the muscle layer of the uterus. Both can cause bleeding and brownish discharge between periods.

Ovarian cysts may also be responsible for bleeding between periods. This can also be caused by fibroids of uterus, cervical polyps, inflammation of the cervix or cervicitis etc.

Since a confirmed diagnosis cannot be given on net please discuss these possibilities with your gynecologist once. Hope this helps. Take care!
