Q: abdominal hysterectomy - painful swelling

Hello Hysterectomy Friends!!

I had an abdominal hysterectomy on 12 September. All went well, but I'm getting a bit worried about how swollen my tummy is. The internal stitches are really tight and my tummy is really swollen above and below the incision area. Is this normal?

I'm in a lot of discomfort when I go to the loo (not for a wee though!) and am worried that they've stitched things up a bit too tight inside for me to go properly. Embarassed

My incision area isn't inflamed and is healing well. I didn't have any clips or external stitches. They just seemed to glue it together and secure is over the top with some strips of tape!

I'd really appreciate any advice you can give. I've only just discovered this site, so I'll have a read through the posts to see if anyone else has had this trouble.

Hope to hear from you soon! Many thanks!

Maggie

I was quite swollen after my surgery as well. It does take a while to heal. You are only 4 wks post-op so I would take it easy for a while. I needed at least 8 weeks before I was able to do things without swelling. Are you taking anything? Anti-inflammatory could help. Ask your Dr. Hope you are feeling better.

involuntary tightening of abdomen during sleep
I am in my 3rd week of recovery from a partial hysterectomy. I have found that during the night when I turn in bed I involuntarily tighten my abdomen area. Is this normal or okay?

I think this is normal...I think your body tells you when something hurts and pulls back...I can recall trying to lay on my stomach in my sleep and quickly turned back...With me they said that many stitches were internal and just being normal in my activities would be OK....I found that the "pain" of doing something wrong, told me to back off....I kind of let this be my guide....

Good luck and you will feel great once this heals up....

Take care,
Caroline
