shopaholic21,
Abdominal diastasis is a separation of the abdominus recti muscles. This pair of muscles connects at the midline of the abdomen at the linea alba. Division of the muscles usually occurs during pregnancy.
It must be differineated from a hernia. In a diastasis, the peritoneal lining of the abdominal wall is not violated, so there is no danger of bowel coming through the defect. This is not so in a hernia.
Exercises usually recommended for this condition include:
Individuals with diastasis recti can perform exercises targeted to help narrow the separation between the muscles. A regular sit up may put increased pressure on the muscles and worsen the condition. To ease the muscles together, individuals lie on the back with feet flat on the floor and the knees bent. After placing the hands on the abdomen with the finger pointing toward the lower body, exhale and raise the head off the floor. The fingers press down in into the abdomen to help push the muscles together. Repeat the exercise daily until the separation decreases.
However, if the exercises do not work, and you want the condition treated, then you will need to have surgery. The procedure can now be done through the laprascope by some surgeons.
Good luck.
