I've had a cough for about 3 weeks which feels like it is trying to get mucus out. I was only really sick for 3 days and couldn't get out of bed, constant sneezing, head ache, fever etc. That was last week. During that time, my mucus was clear. It is now very yellow. I feel better but still have a cough and yellow mucus with black strings sometimes. Do I need to go to a doctor? Or will it clear up on its own?

Welcome to e health forum. ‎

The cause of respiratory infections can either be a viral or due to bacterial origin. Most Viral infections ‎‎or the upper respiratory tract are usually benign, ‎and subside within 7 to 10 days with conservative ‎‎management ‎with anti-inflammatory medications ‎like advil or motrin. Cough ‎and throat irritation can ‎‎be reduced ‎with cough lozenges and vitamin C ‎supplements.‎ ‎

In case of severe symptoms, like presence of yellowish green sputum, thick secretions, breathing difficulty, weakness, loss of appetite, etc you may need to seek a doctors help, for prescription of antibiotics to ‎‎treat the infection and other supportive medications.

I hope this helps.
