God's Sense of Humor

August 8th, 2011 by RabbiMitch63
After God created the world, God made man and woman.
Then, to keep the whole thing from collapsing, God invented humor.
Bill Kelly, "Mordillo"

Guillermo Mordillo, known simply as Mordillo, is a creator of cartoons and animations and was one of the most widely published cartoonists of the 1970s. He is most famous for his humorous, colorful, and wordless depictions of love, sports (in particular soccer and golf), and long-necked animals.

From 1976 to 1981, Mordillo's cartoons were used by Slovenian artist Miki Muster who created Mordillo, a series of 400 short animations (300 min) that were later presented in Cannes and bought by television studios from 30 countries.

We seem to have this notion that God (whatever that means for you) is a serious looking, bearded, white-haired wonder! How we determined God's gender is something I find humorous. That sounds like something man would do to cover our gender's insecurities about ourselves. Have you ever looked at zebras, hyenas, and platypuses and wondered how something without a sense of humor could have created them? A talking snake in Genesis; what language did the snake speak; what accent did the snake have; what nationality was the snake?

Adam and Eve eat the forbidden apple at the snake's behest, Adam blames Eve and then Adam hides behind a bush, naked as can be, and when God asks him where he is, Adam actually believes that God cannot see him hiding behind the bush. This God that can see beyond sight would not be able to see this naked guy behind a bush? Sense of humor; God could open to sell out crowds at the Comedy Club in your community!

There are so many jokes in the Bible if we take the time to see the humor God has provided us. I awaken every day to a loving, laughing and joyous God who wants me to laugh, love, cry with joy, smile, give to others and rejoice in God's warmth and hugs. There is an old Yiddish saying, "Man plans and God laughs." God laughs everyday at our need to believe that we are in total control of our lives rather than just get out of the way and let God carry the burdens with and for us.

My prayer for you today is that you will find God's humor in you and lighten your load with laughter, smiles and joy.
