Home From Ottawa

February 28th, 2012 by lifeofthedifferentlyabled

Hello how are you all doing? Thank you to those who tried to keep up with my Ottawa adventures unfortunately it seemed that I had some technical issues but alas I am back in action and at home with a setup that I know so this post should go live without issue.

I have some tips for wheelchair users looking to fly.

  1. Get to the airport at leasttwo hours early (it took two hours to get through the process)
  2. Insist that you stay in your chair until boarding this helps your comfort level and allows you to explain how to fold your chair in the case of my roommate I was actually able to fold her chair for them while they were loading her into the plane
  3. Ask for a transfer bench if you fly in a small plane where you are requiredto be lifted on they have a bench that helps with getting into your seat
  4. I cant put my finger on why but getting in to the plane is harder than getting out

We arrived in Ottawa after an hour flight (its approximately a 7 hour drive) we used the local wheelchair transit system and that in itself would give me reason to want to move to the nations capital not to mention you can call and book 24 hours in advance! Here at home a minimum booking is 3 days thus we were in heaven!

Using the transit system made getting around the city and to my speaking engagement at st pius x a breeze the outcome of this trip is that I LOVE to travel, I only missed my bed!
