It occurred to me the other day, while reading another cerebral palsy blog: just how much I take my ability to speak and be understood for granted. It makes me realizes how much technology has reduced social isolation for people who are non verbal. My first experience with augmentative communication was at age five when I attended school and the local children rehabilitation centre. Several of my classmates were non verbal. I think this was one of my first exposures to technology. It was the early 90s but that class also had a computer with rather primitive games – funny what one remembers!
