Daily Bite: 3 Delicious Summer Smoothies to Try

June 8th, 2012 by eHealthGuide

Fruit SmoothieBecause summer weather is warmer, we tend to reach for more refreshing drinks to cool down. However, sodas, processed ice teas and many other drinks contain excessive sugar, calories and chemicals.

Instead, try a healthful and refreshing smoothie that provides nutrition at the same time. In many cases, you can add yogurt or protein powder to a smoothie to boost its nutritional content and use it as a delicious and satisifying liquid meal replacement.

1. Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Mix up a half cup each of strawberries and bananas with a generous dollop of plain yogurt and ice. Add the ingredients to a blender and mix on high. You can add some crushed ice to make it cooler. The result is a frothy, tasty smoothie that is high in magnesium, potassium, protein and calcium.

2. Mixed Berry Smoothie

Mix up a cup of different frozen or fresh berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries) along with a large scoop of fruit sherbet or sorbet. Blend the ingredients together until creamy. This smoothie is sweet and tart at the same time, and provides excellent vitamins and antioxidants as well as refreshment.

3. Orange, Berry and Banana Smoothie

Pour about a half cup of frozen mixed berries into a blender along with half of a banana, cut into small pieces. Add about one half cup of orange juice to the smoothie and blend until evenly mixed. This smoothie contains vitamin C from the orange juice, along with the potassium from the bananas and antioxidants from the berries. It provides natural fruit sugars and is both tart and sweet.
